Carting Around Harlem
The New York Times published a light piece on the cart trend in Harlem. The author described the different varieties and features of the “granny” shopping carts that people use to haul groceries and laundry. He interviewed a number of Harlemites about their shopping carts and what they like best about them.
My first shopping cart became a much needed accessory when I moved into a five story walk-up Brownstone in Brooklyn. I used to pull it up the stairs after shopping and laundry trips. I would describe my cart as middle of line with no fancy features — just practical and dependable. I actually have two carts. The first one is a small cart that I only use for light shopping or when I need to carry packages inside from an out of town shopping trip. The big cart is for the bigger loads…a couple of weeks worth of groceries or the laundry that had accumulated beyond the capacity of the washers in the laundry room of the basement of my building.

As a native Harlemite, I didn’t purchase my first cart until I was grown, about 25. I actually have a small (groceries) and a extra large(laundry). They are LIFE SAVERS.
