On August 18, 2006 by D. Bell

This coming weekend is Harlem Week and there will be plenty to do all around Harlem. Visit the Official Harlem Week Guide for specific dates, locations and times. Here is a general rundown of events:

On August 19th, and 20th, HARLEM WEEK invites everyone to take part in one of New York City’s most exciting weekends, beginning with the annual “Uptown Saturday Nite” music festival. This all-day celebration consists of a plethora of exciting events as attendees take to the streets of Harlem, enjoying outdoor cultural arts, crafts, exotic foods and live entertainment along West 135th St. btw. Malcolm X Blvd. and St. Nicholas Ave. The Children’s Festival comes alive on Uptown Saturday Nite. It features a petting zoo, story-tellers, interactive arts, fashion shows and other entertainment, all with a strong emphasis on education and achievement. Uptown Saturday Nite also features The National Historic Black College Fair & Expo, where students and families discover various colleges and financial options for attending them.

Sunday, August 20th, is HARLEM DAY and the good times continue. The proceeding day’s entertainment stages and Children’s Festival remain on 135th Street, along with the addition of the 17th Annual Upper Manhattan Auto Show which includes a display of cars from antiques to 2005 preview models; The NYC Health Fair & Expo with free health information and screenings, and the annual “Flava” fashion show. Throughout the weekend, attendees will have the opportunity to support the festival’s fundraising efforts to improve life for both Harlemites and New Orleanians.

From August 22 until early September, Harlem spices things up as some of the neighborhood’s famous restaurants and eateries offer “A Taste of Harlem”. During this time, patrons can enjoy the full flavor of the community with a variety of delectable dishes at the special reduced price of $20.06.
