The Freshest Birds are in Harlem
Manhattan Live Poultry, located between Second and Third Aves., has been serving East Harlem for more than 15 years, and has a steady group of loyal consumers, including Victor Morales.”It isn’t as cheap as a frozen turkey. But it is worth the price. Once you start cooking with them you will never stop.”
The birds sold by Manhattan Live Poultry range in size from 10 to 40 pounds and sell for $1.89 per pound. Customers choose a bird, and then the shop kills it and cleans it.
“We do everything for the customer other than cook it,” Batista said.
Anyone looking to buy a fresh bird can go to the shop until Thanksgiving Day, but Batista said it’s better to come as early as possible.
“We get a lot of people on Thanksgiving morning, but we are usually sold out by then. We usually sell over 250 birds just on Wednesday,” he said.
