Profiles: The Harlem Gospel Choir

On January 18, 2007 by D. Bell

The Harlem Gospel Choir, with 60 members and counting, travels the world sharing its message. The large contingent allows the choir to rotate travel commitments whether internationally or nationally.

“The choir was founded on two principles — to give young, black men and women opportunities to be exposed to gospel music; and to bring about a better understanding of African-American culture and the black church,” said Bailey, who still travels with the choir.harlem.jpg

Expect clapping and dancing and exuberance. Expect everything from “Oh Happy Day” to a medley of Stevie Wonder tunes.”We bring in saxophones, trumpets, you name it — it’s very therapeutic,” Bailey said.

The choir includes age ranges of 18 to 70.

“Every Saturday we have rehearsals and auditions — we’re always looking for new talent,” he said.
