America’s Most Elusive Artist

Triple Candie

Foreground, “Beyond the Pail,” and, in back, “Self-Portraits,” by Lester Hayes, an unrecognized, influential and extremely elusive artist.

Lester Hayes, a hugely influential yet barely known artist, gets his first retrospective this week. Sadly, it’s probably going to be his last, not least because he doesn’t actually exist. He’s an invention of Triple Candie — among the few alternative spaces that still seek out projects “too impractical, or arcane, or outré to find a mainstream platform,” says Holland Cotter.

“Lester Hayes: Selected Work, 1962-1975” through Sunday, Triple Candie, 461 West 126th Street, (212) 865-0783.
