Grammy award-winning singer Alicia Keys is offering $5,000 scholarships to four students from Jacksonville, New Orleans, Atlanta and New York City’s Harlem neighborhood.aliciakey.jpg

“We’re just looking for standout students who are definitely college-bound and need a little bit of help financially to really achieve their dreams,” Keys said.

The Open Doors Scholars Program is part of Frum Tha Ground Up, a Jacksonville-based nonprofit organization started by Keys’ road manager, D.J. Walton. Walton went to college in Jacksonville.

Students selected will represent the organization at school appearances and must perform community service each semester.

Keys (born Alicia Augello Cook) is a Harlem native who was raised in Hell’s Kitchen by her single mother. She began to play classical piano at the age of seven.

The video for “You Don’t Know My Name,” off of her sophomore CD, was shot at Pan Pan Diner in Harlem before the restaurant was destroyed in a devasting fire in 2004.

Recently Keys has turned her focus to the big screen and she will be seen in a handful of movies released later this year: “Smokin Aces” (2007) with Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia and Jeremy Piven and “The Nanny Diaries” (2007) with Scarlet Johansson. Keys also landed a role portraying piano prodigy Philippa Schuyler in the film, “Composition in Black and White” (2007).
