Soul on Ice
When most people think of sports in Harlem the first sport that comes to mind is basketball. Harlem’s streetball legacy is embedded as deeply in the culture of Harlem as the renaissance period. Yet Harlem has helped to create athletics in sports ranging from baseball to lacrosse to tennis and beyond.
With two ice skating rinks located in Harlem (Lasker and Riverbank) it would stand to reason that Harlem would also include winter sports in the mix of activities. One organization that is a big draw for Harlem girls is Figure Skating in Harlem; FSH has been featured nationally for it’s involvement in the community. Not only does it offer opportunities for girls to hone their skating skills, but it also offers tutoring, mentoring and scholarships.
On February 10, 2007, Figure Skating in Harlem will host a public skate party at Lasker Rink. For details about the organization and their events visit the website.
Sharing the ice in harlem is the organization Ice Hockey in Harlem. The organization is open to both girls and boys of all ages. Recently the Rangers participated in an auction to benefit IHIH. Watch video from the event. To find out more about IHIH click the link above.
