while i completely agree that columbia's aversion to using "harlem" is absurd it should be noted that manhattanville does accurately describe the neighborhood in harlem bet 122st and 135st in terms of the north/south boundaries as well as the hudson river and st nicholas as the east/west boundaries.then hamilton heights and washington as you go north

The MTA bus depot in the area is known as the Manhattanville Depot. Ditto for the naming of the post office and nearby housing projects. Are they also all in denial about being in Harlem? All of Columbia's materials on the development refer to it as "Manhattanville in West Harlem"

"This location has contributed to the pioneering of a unique section of Harlem".

Strikes as profoundly remiss to editorialize like this sans mentioning Columbia's intension to literally take over what is here characterized as "a unique section of Harlem".

Without taking a position either way, it is in the papers and media nearly daily, no? I loved hearing Columbia's President last week on WNYC try to explain away and justify the use of the word Manhattanville and intentional avoidance of the word "harlem" in the titling, branding, and offical naming of the development.

Yes, technically historically one can attach the word Manhattanville to a section of that proposed project, however it's "Harlem" and the Columbia Pres had a tough time dancing around this avoidance.

Columbia simply does not want the label and brand of "Harlem" connected with this proposed expansion in it's titling. I actually land on the side of Pro Columbia expansion, however I still have to be honest that this is pure, outright applyinhg of a stigma, by CU, to the brand, label, image of the word "Harlem".
