The Legacy of Walter Turnbull
Word of Walter Turnbull’s passing created a wave of shock
and sorrow throughout the community, particularly amongst those who were personally touched by his gift of music.
In the course of this week, much has been said about Dr. Turnbull’s legacy, both positive and negative. Today, he will be laid to rest and honored at the very church where he founded the famed Boys Choir of Harlem. Those wishing to pay their final respects should go to Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 101 W. 123rd Street at Lenox today at 4 p.m.
The final word is the legacy left by Walter Turnbull — the gift of the music that he shared not only with Harlem but with the world. Rest in peace.
His legacy, I believe, will be the thousands of young people he has touched, the thousands he has lifted and who have gone on to distinguish themselves in all walks of life.
Turnbull’s legacy is also bolstered by numerous awards and citations, including the National Medal of Arts. He was also named to the New York Black 100 by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
I learned so much from my time in the choir, particularly the opportunities he gave us to see the world.
