M&G – Victim of the Columbia Expansion?
A dedicated reader of UF (and life long resident of Harlem among other wonderful things) writes:
Hey – I was curious to know if you have gotten any word on M&G Restaurant? I passed by it tonight and there was a sign on the window saying breakfast all day from 8-4:30. This was about 7pm and they were closed.
Are they under new management?
Anyone know the deal? I know they were greasy and old but goodness if they didn’t have some incredibly tender hamhocks! I would hate for this to be true considering we’ve lost Harlem staples like Pan Pan amongst others. Chime in please.

Anonymous…you are right. I feel like all of the things that made Harlem special for me as a kid are no longer. PanPan, RecordShack, Bill’s Hardware, Bargin World, Woolworth…I can go on and on.
It depresses me.
I swear…if I lose M&G’s I really will be crushed. My ex and I used to hit it up all the time at some ungodly hour of the night for his fried chicken fix. M&G’s is the last in central Harlem for some DECENT soul food.
At what point is it no longer “Harlem”, anyone keeping track? No PanPan, M&G’s, & Record Shack, the tourist places don’t count as they’re for tourist (Lenox Lounge, Sylvia’s, & Cotton Club).
Harlem died when Guiliani cleaned up 125th St. in the 90′s and the street vendors. Harlem’s never been an orderly place, not in the Renaissance, never.
Welcome to the new Harlem, diluted as hell. A Mormon church on Lenox Avenue? That says it all. Goodbye M&G, rappers everywhere will now have to find a new background for a night shoot video.
Hey Tishee, this is from an old post:

What are they putting in Pan Pan’s place?
i surely hope that M&G is just going through wierd business hours. i’ll sooner relinquish Sylvia’s befoe M&G.
on the subject of historical establishments, construction workers have already begun to dismantle the old pan-pan site. i remember an old post saying that the owner wanted to clear that entire area. the time has arrived i guess.
also, old Cafe Lia is going to open as a linens store…the old site of Slice of Harlem which became Swing Out! is slated to open as a corner Deli. The sign looks nasty, too.I’ll try to snap some pics as i pass through there when I walk home.
anyone know what’s going on on the northwest corner of 145th St and Lenox. I’ve been seeing contruction guys working inside…jus wondering.
Aren’t they closed on Monday and Tuesdays? M&G’s hours stay fluctuating, so I pray that’s just the case…
