Weekend Guide: Education and culture for all ages

If you find yourself at home bored this weekend you will have no excuse. There are many events taking place in Harlem Thursday through Sunday. Check the Google calendar or click on events in the sidebar for a full array of local events. Here are a few extras you may have missed:

“The Encounter of Juan Bobo & Pedro Animal / El Encuentro de Juan Bobo y Pedro Animal.”

Description:
A comical play about famous offbeat characters from Puerto Rican and Dominican folklore who discover self-esteem and the meaning of friendship. Presented by the Society of the Educational Arts, Inc. in celebration of Immigrant History week. For children ages 4 to 12. This program was generously funded through the Cultural After School Adventure Program by New York City Council Member Robert Jackson and The City of New York.

“Far Out Physics: Parachutes.”

Audience: children (school age)

Description:
Explore the concept of surface area and apply it to its use in the air for parachutes and design your own parachute to land safely. Presented by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Recommended for children ages 6 to 12. Preregistration is required. This program was generously funded through the Cultural After School Adventure Program by New York City Council Member Melissa Mark Viverito and The City of New York.

Across the African Diaspora

“Meet the Author Nikki Giovanni.”

Description:
Please join us in welcoming Nikki Giovanni, poet and author of many favorites, including Rosa, a biography of Rosa Parks, Love Poems, For All the Changes and, most recently, On My Journey Now: Looking At African-American History Through the Spirituals. Nikki’s books have been honored with many awards, including the NAACP Image Awards. Nikki lives in Virginia, where she also serves as University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. For ages 12-18. Registration required; space is limited.
