Aunt Meriam’s Goes Global
The con
troversial cross between a colored museum and antique store located on 125th Street has decided to pack up and go global. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to stop by Aunt Meriam’s while it was a brick and mortar operation thanks to my bad habit of procrastinating. Aunt Meriam’s was featured in a New York Times article last year prompted by a window display that included a KKK gown and a Harper’s Weekly issue from the 1800s that
featured a lynched Negro. The store specialized in all manner of stereotypical memorabilia and collectibles that spanned the globe and showcased the painful history of Africans in America.
The empty storefront window now contains a letter dated May 7th from the owners (click on thumbnail to read) and the promise of a new (Ethiopian?) cafe which would be quite ironic when you think about it.
