Low pay blamed for shortage of police manpower
Harlem’s 28th precinct has lost a huge percentage of its officers over the past few years.
In the 28th, Lynch said, there are currently 188 officers compared with 252 in 2000.
The department had anticipated adding 3000 new recruits to the force but will only be hiring 700-800 new recruits. Since 2000, the department as a whole has lost over 5000 officers.
“Specifically, the NYPD is unable to recruit and retain enough qualified candidates to staff the precincts and commands in the city at a level that is safe,” Lynch said.
Critics say the police union is itself responsible for the low starting pay, accusing it of selling out its own recruits’ salary in order to get raises for existing members. Union leadership denies the charge.

HELLO
Its really sad to say this but the NYPD has lost its mind. Let me give you an example. They are so hard up for people there taken on anybody. I know of one such girl who is a stripper in newburgh NY. She is BI polar and on an anti DE-present drug. She does not even live in the city but lives in beacon NY and I guess lied where she living to get on the job. in 06 of last year She has 4 domestics 3 with the state police and one with the Dutchess County sheriff dept. On one the domestics she told the male party your dead its in the report.and this was over photos. On one of the domestics that was not reported she was drinking and pulled a hand gun out and was pointing at her self I had to have some female friends to talk her down. Also at one time she hit the father of her child with a rented car in his drive way and knock the wind out of him again he did not report that. this girl love to spend money she has a 2007 chevy 4×4 and pays 1,070 per month for that truck that nuts. in 06 she was sleeping with a married under cover cop she met at the strip club
NYFD Trainees don’t complain because they don’t have to pay for their own equipment. NYPD Recruit officers pay close to $3,000 in uniform and other equipment.
$25k!?! What the hell do they expect?

The union may deny this but is is true. They accepted the arbitration rules for the 2004/2005 contract by lowering the pay for trainees entering the NYPD. Just ask the officers that got lump sum checks in 2005 for over Five Thousand and more dollars.
I think the reason for the union to accept low starting pay for trainees was because at that time there was a heavy minority recruitment to join NYPD, so lets cut the salary,’they’ don’t need that kind of money. But it back-fired because non-minorities joined in droves.
The NYFD has the same low starting pay, I don’t hear their union bi***ing about how their trainees can’t make it.
