A Stakeholders symposium on HIV/AIDS: Advancing the Message of Crisis to Communities of Color

Columbia University, Lerner Hall Roone Arledge Auditorium,
Broadway at 114th Street

Although African American men still account for the majority of new HIV/AIDS cases, the rate of infection among African American women is growing alarmingly. Within the last 10 years (from 1991 – 2002) the rate has increased from 22 to 34 percent. Similarly, among other
peoples of color, increased new incidents of HIV /AIDS have also been cited. 20 years of statistical data and we are still in crisis. Statistics alone may not be sufficient to get communities of color to respond to this epidemic. We must put HIV/AIDS into context; we must find better methods and better approaches. Collaborative efforts within our communities are needed in order to help all peoples of color understand this epidemic and be empowered to affect changes to stem this dangerous tide. Thus service providers must be armed with the vital information to better serve communities of color.
