Cemi Underground
Cemi Underground
by guest blogger: Doug Cress
Luis Cordero and Sery Colon, proprietors of the recently opened Cemi Underground, are excited about the future of their gallery, recently opened at the foot of my apartment building on the corner of 112th and Lexington Avenue.
I was excited too. The former tenant, a $.99 Cent Store, offered little in the way of intrigue. The space, once dirty and dull, is now filled with original artwork, t-shirts, prints and a selection of books and music.
Cemi Underground, one of many new cultural hot spots in East Harlem, will offers regular events – many in Spanish and English – details of which can be found on their website. The small space houses a stage in the back. In addition to rotating art exhibits and live music, performances will include poetry readings, serial book releases and other presentations.
Luis and Sery got their start in the East Village, with a small gallery and bookstore which closed in 1999. Both of Puerto Rican decent, they wanted a place to celebrate their culture, and instill a greater sense of community in the area.
