The Queen of Soul Food celebrates 45 years today
Sylvia’s Restaurant, The Queen of Soul food™, celebrates 45 years in business on August 1, 2007, with an all day salute to it’s beloved Harlem. The day will begin at 7 a.m. with “Approaching Storm Marching Band,” and our savory, annual free breakfast consisting of smothered chicken, grits and biscuits. This milestone anniversary will officially announce via proclamation from the City Council Woman Inez Dickens office the renaming of 126th Street and Lenox Avenue to “Sylvia Woods Way.” The second half of the day will kick-off at noon, with an old fashion block party that will enrich and entertain the community in the areas of health, education and finance. The celebration also serves as a kick-off to SHWSF October 18th Fundraiser.
The Sylvia and Herbert Woods Scholarship Foundation honorary chairs, Lew Zuchman, Executive Director of SCAN, Dr. Freeman, Medical Director of The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in New York City, and Dr. Feldman, Chairman of Hackensack Emergency Trauma Department, will address the community on the importance of health and education. Maria Davis of Friends in Deed and AIDS activist, will host the afternoon’s festivities that will include a healthy cooking demo, Sylvia’s Harlem Idol Contest, home buyers information provided by The Corcoran Group, live Jazz sponsored by Sugar Hill Brewery, a Hair Show by Pizazz Spa and Salon and more. Several businesses and community organizations such as Experience Harlem, Minisink Townhouse and College of New Rochelle will have tables with information that is sure to leave the community empowered.
