Join us for a free, traditional West African Dance Class outside, under the sun at Central Park’s Great Hill, taught by Master
Instructor Nafisa Sharriff. Experience the rich folklore of the Old Malian Empire, as we dance, drum and sing under the sun! Plan to stay a while and enjoy the afternoon with your family and friends… on your blanket, with some food, as you meet and greet the village!

A bit on the instructor:

Nafisa Sharriff
Master Teacher/Choreographer/Dancer
Nafisa Sharriff, recipient of the 1996 Ethnic Dance Award & numerous community service commemorations, is a multi-talented dancer/choreographer of modern, jazz, hip-hop & West African dance. She has performed with Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Spike Lee, TC Carson, C&C Music Factory, The Chuck Davis Dance Company & Kairaba West African Dance Company. Her television credits include performances on The Richard Pryor Show, Dance Black America, & Positively Black. In addition, she choreographed “Cantos Latinos,” starring Eddie Palmieri & Los Hovenes del Barrio for channel 13-PBS. She can also be seen in numerous music videos with artists such as Anita Baker, Kool Moe Dee, & Angelique Kidjo. Ms. Sharriff’s theatrical credits for choreography include the Obie Award winning play, “Blown Sideways Through Life,” “Spiritual Journey” (Apollo/EST), & “A Joyful Noise”(Off Broadway). Ms. Sharriff is a masterful instructor of traditional West African folklore of the Old Malian Empire. In past seasons, she has not only taught, but also choreographed for the AmericanDance Festival at Duke University as well as numerous colleges & universities in New York City & around the country. Beyond her dance career, Ms. Sharriff conducts workshops, classes & retreats in meditation, stress management, inner healing & Spiritual tools for transformation through her institute, “Entering The Holy of Holies, An Institute of Learning & Healing, Inc.”

  • I have been dancing with Nafisa Shariff some yeats ago. I will be in NY for a short time in November and would like to get in touch with her. She is a grat and generous dancer and I would apprecate any information.
