Volunteer Opportunities in Harlem
2007 September 7
One of our readers suggested that Uptown Flavor start talking about volunteer opportunities in the area, so here it is, a list of some things you could do in the name of community service.
Happening soon:
- Family Friends: For those aged 50+, join Family Friends and help children with special care needs
- Faces NY: Forging Ahead for Community Empowerment & Support, an organization that helps people living with HIV/AIDS, is looking for after-school volunteers and legal assistants
Year-round:
- Harlem R.B.I.: for those who love kids and baseball/softball
- Community Kitchen of West Harlem: food, people, and community
- East Harlem Tutorial Program: pretty self-explanatory
- The East Harlem at Exodus House: a middle school that has volunteer tutoring and coaching programs, weekend volunteer events, and a volunteer committee
- Yorkville Common Pantry: reducing hunger on the Upper East Side and in East Harlem
- Housing Works: helping New Yorkers living with AIDS — volunteer at the thrift stores, bookstore, or client services
- ABC Association to Benefit Children: Help disadvantaged children and their families
- Ice Hockey in Harlem: Classroom + Skating Rink! Be a coach, mentor, teacher, or help at special events
- Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service: This org works with families in East Harlem, and has a long list of volunteer opportunities
- Harlem Hospital: Various programs, including Reach Out And Read Program and Aging Foster Grandparent Program
