Time Out’s Soul-ful Neighborhoods

Time Out New York put together its list of Top 10 ‘Hoods with New York Soul. Washington Heights is up there at #3 (“Bodegaville lives on, despite the white people.”), East Harlem squeezes in at #9 (“It’s sprouting new condos — and luring back former residents.” … Not sure how new condos = soul…it’s their list.)
Central Harlem isn’t in the top 10, but it’s #11, which isn’t bad. West Harlem gets #13. Various Upper West Side divisions get 16-20.
Take a look and see what you think.

While I appreciate any exposure to Harlem spots in mainstream media it would seem to me that they could hire local talent that know the ins and outs of true harlem to compile lists like that. I mean off the top of my head I could think of places that are genuine staples of the neighborhood. And i mean before places like Melba’s, Native, and Zoma came on board.

The article on Central Harlem is correct and sad at the same time, Harlem has begun to lose its FLAVOR with all the construction going on and “Big Name” stores arriving, Harlem is beginning to look like any other business and urban district.
One day the Buses will stop arriving and the Churches will be gone because their congregations are no longer living in Harlem.
We may have to set up a Harlem Village, an area set aside to resemble old time Harlem with tenements, juke joints, number holes etc and charge admission to tourist enter Harlem Village. (LOL)
