“Stick Up Kids” Film Shoot in Harlem

On October 23, 2007 by

Director James Hawethorne on set of Whilst on my walk home I stooped upon a movie shoot taking place on 142nd St and Lenox. After asking around and getting no answers I took a peak at the film permit. It was for a production called “Stick-Up Kids”. Being a cinephile and not having heard about this fill at all I decided to delve further. It is being directed by James Hawthorne who seems to have had a small role in just about every popular TV series from the last decade including “NYPD Blue”, “Stargate SG-1″, and “Charmed”. He’s also been in a number of films. “Stick Up Kids” comes on the heels of another film he was involved with called “The System Within” (also the name of the production company behind the current shoot), a straight-to-dvd film about an famous international model, Tony “Wise” Good, who came out from the streets only be inmersed into another ugly world rife with corporate corruption. The film has an interesting array of familiar faces including actress Kim Porter, rapper Chingy, and Taimak (which you might remember as Leroy from “Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon”). Black News Magazine offers more details regarding “The System Within”.

Regarding “Stick Up Kids” I have not found any sort of synopsis for film yet so your guess is as good as mine. However, I managed to come across a September casting call for the film. The list of characters alone seems to make for a very interesting story:

  • I was on the set and I know that Bryce Wilson from BeautyShop is one of the actors and this other guy from SOul Food and the guy from the 5heartbeats and other recognizable faces. This movie is official. It’s coming out real soon, so stay tuned.

  • I heard about this film one day when I was listening to a radio show about a month ago. I believe it was the films company publicist her name was Pam Pinnock. She wrote a book called The Father Fracture. She was on the radio talking about her book and she mentioned the film The Stick Up Kids being filmed in Harlem and said actor Hawthorne James was the director. I love this guy Hawthorne especially in Five Heart Beats. I had forgotten all about the film until I heard the publicist on a tv talk show about a week ago where she was talking about her clients Jagged Edge and she mentioned the film The Stick Up Kids again. Now I just found this article so I am curious to see what the hype is all about. Does anyone know when this film will hit the big screens? Is it still in production, my mom lives in Harlem so I might have to drop by the set and check it out.
