The Passing of Dazivedo Watson, Harlem Political Figure
Note: This was received by UptownFlavor from Ben Rosen- Ofc. of Assemblyman Keith Wright
Greetings:
Last night, October 29th, 2007, a Harlem political powerhouse, Mr.
Dazivedo Watson (1927-2007)passed away. Mr. Watson, or Daz as he was known to his
friends and family, was involved in Harlem politics dating back to the
1960′s when he was a founding member of the Harlem Community Democratic
Club and a consultant to Councilman Frederick E. Samuel.
Dazivedo came to Harlem from Jamaica, and quickly became involved in the
Harlem community, founding the 2460 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard
Association and serving as a HPD 7A Administrator overseeing the renewal
and reconstruction of buildings all over Harlem. It was this activism
which drew various candidates for City and State public office to
Dazivedo for help with getting out the vote, securing endorsements and
utilizing his tremendous political acumen to aid in their campaigns.
Most recently, he had served as Vice President Emeritus of the Frederick
E. Samuel Community Democratic Club, whose club Presidency he had held
for many years. Additionally, Dazivedo was a key adviser to C. Virginia
Fields, in her campaign for District Leader and subsequent campaigns for
City Council and Borough President. Mr. Watson was also fundamental in
the election of Judge Bruce Wright to the New York State Supreme Court.
Dazivedo was a driving force behind Keith Wright’s campaigns for
District Leader, State Assembly and Manhattan Borough President. Not
only did Daz show Keith the ropes in politics, he was a father figure
whose bond went far beyond the usual trappings of a professional
relationship. He was Keith’s confidant and best friend.
Mr. Watson is survived by two sons, Errol and James Watson, a brother,
Louis Watson, a nephew Kenroy Watson and a granddaughter Tiffany Watson.
Information as to any memorial arrangements will be forthcoming.
