Australian Town Upset at Being Compared to Harlem
Harlem has undergone tremendous changes in the past 15 years. Films like “American Gangster” highlight some of the more troubled times, but generally Harlem is seen as the poster-child for a gentrifying community more so than a bastion of crime and terror. It seems Harlem’s international reputation may still has some catching up to do.
According to an article in the Geelong Advertiser, one Australian community is very upset about being compared to Harlem because of its rising crime rate. Given all the changes that Harlem has endured (for better and for worse) over the years, are you surprised that crime is still a big part of Harlem’s reputation?
