Another Scoop: Leasing Public Housing Property To Private Developers
NYCHA intends to lease 17 East Harlem properties to private developers. The plan is to create over 300 units of affordable housing. Some oppose privatization altogether. Others believe creating new partnerships is necessary to solve the affordable housing crisis. Read columnist Errol Louis’ thoughts here.

“At least 300 of the units being created on the site will be permanently subsidized for households earning up to $42,540 for a family of four or $29,760 for a single person. The remaining units will go to families making up to $70,900 for a family of four or $49,600 for a single person. NYCHA, in turn, will get lease payments from the developers; the exact amount is still being negotiated.”
This is a very clever way for NYCHA to rid themselves of Public Housing which was not built for minority use anyway. How many minority families make that kind of money and if they did, would they want to live in the “Projects”?
Another plan in the works is to take the parking lots of two lower east side Housing Developments and build separat housing on them.
