Wednesday Schomburg Reading Series
Carlton Byrd’s ” Homecoming” directed by Robbie Sublett on Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00p.m.
“Homecoming” follows an African-American ‘homeless’ man searching for the home he once knew. Along the way he stumbles across an empty lot he affectionately calls, ‘slave land.’ When he steps into this plot hoping to transform the space into a home of his own, he disturbs the soil and wakes the ‘memories’/'blood and bones’ of the people who lived there before him. Through characters Wilma Jean, Calvin, C.T., James, and Drunk Man, audiences journey into an investigation of the failure and success of the African-American Family post-reconstruction. The production asks, within the African-American community – a community struggling to hold together its families since a forced arrival to this country - how does one sustain a home after a vital piece of the family structure is taken away?
