In this 10-week program, students will study the works of African-American
poet Langston Hughes, English poet and playwright William Shakespeare and
Mexican-American poet Sandra Cisneros.
Spoken word and competitive marathon poetry readings (“slams”) may be
the most enduring by-product of the hip-hop nation and Generation X. In this
course, students will become familiar with spoken word rhythm, rhyme, meter,
language and presentation, and will then translate the works of each classical
poet into contemporary spoken word, or “slam” poetry.
