Earth Day, Every Day

For Con Edison customers, celebrating Earth Day is as simple as changing a light bulb.

This month, Con Edison will work to renew its commitment to the environment by distributing free compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs at environmental events in Brooklyn and Harlem, sponsoring green events throughout New York City, and urging customers to “think green.”

For Con Edison customers, replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs can help the environment and save money. CFLs use 25 percent less electricity than standard bulbs, and last up to 10 times longer. To promote the use of CFLs, Con Edison will help distribute free CFLs at two events this weekend:

– Saturday, April 19, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Harlem’s Green Festival at the Plaza — Harlem State Office Building, at 163 West 125th Street. To learn more about Earth Day in Harlem visit http://www.weact.org/.

For Earth Day this year, and to help the planet every day, there are a number of simple things New Yorkers can do to help the environment. The following are some easy suggestions:

– Pay your Con Edison bill online, and help plant trees by registering for the e*bill program. Visit www.conEd.com/ebill to learn how to enroll.

– Choose ENERGY STAR-qualified appliances, which use 10 to 50 percent less electricity than standard models. A list of ENERGY STAR products is available at http://www.energystar.gov.

– Shut off all the lights when you leave a room.

– Turn off your monitor when you leave your computer for more than 20 minutes. Screen savers use electricity.

– When not in use, unplug appliances and equipment including TVs, cable boxes, computers and monitors. Turning computers on and off daily will not damage them.
