Art for Change Series Continues
The Riverside Theatre continues their tradition of bringing thought-provoking theater to the community. What’s up next
:
On Friday & Saturday, May 16th & 17th at 8:00pm, H brings Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1 & 2 into the 21st Century. The work examines the anatomy of power through a Hip Hop prism with a contemporary urban interpretation of the Bard’s chilling words on the divine right to rule and the deep ambiguities of power. Directed by Kaia Calhoun, this adaptation of Shakespeare’s play brings forth themes of violence and conflict by looking at current-day issues. The piece consists of Shakespearean verse as well as spoken word and rap. Following each performance will be a 30-minute workshop that looks at the dynamics of power and that introduces the Theatre of the Oppressed workshop, Anatomy of Power, held the following week on Saturday, May 24th at 7:00pm.
On Friday & Saturday, May 30th & 31st at 8:00pm, Axes to the Roots explores the lives and conditions of residents who live in homeless shelters. Also directed by Kaia Calhoun, three stories will be told, “Before Katrina,” “Abused Men: the Unspoken Domestic Violence,” and “People, Places, and Playgrounds: the Family Shelter,” putting a human face on a forgotten issue and demonstrating the indomitable human spirit in the midst of dire circumstances. Following each performance, the Theatre of the Oppressed workshops will center around the face of American homelessness.
