Tour De Force: Hamilton Heights

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not go up on the Hill? Sugar Hill that is– also known as Hamilton Heights amongst the more cultured sect. The Hamilton Heights Homeowners Association is hosting their annual House and Garden Tour with events that start tomorrow and extend through Sunday.

Last year, the weather was mild enough (though a slightly damp) to go out and explore the neighborhood. Hopefully this year the weather will be even more cooperative. Although I didn’t take part in the official tour, I did take an unofficial tour of some of the spacious, well maintained homes that were hosting open houses in the area. There was one home that I fell in love with — with enough historical character retained to make it a novelty, yet enough modern updates to make it comfortable.

It is also a great time to kill two birds with one stone. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the Hamilton Grange move so you can see for yourself what a monumental (excuse the pun) job it is going to be to move that old house. If you haven’t gotten a chance to go by Harlem Textile Works, they are around the way as well and might be hosting their own open house.

After the jump are details about the official tour. Otherwise, if your are on the recession plan, you can do like I did last year and profile.

The Hamilton Heights House & Garden Tour is a self-guided tour of open houses in one of New York’s most prestigious landmark neighborhoods – The Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill Historic Districts in Harlem. Each year, for five hours on the first Sunday in June, visitors are invited into a dozen homes that have been lovingly restored by their owners. These houses exhibit a wide variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Flemish, Tudor, and Italian Renaissance Revival, and offer a variety of exquisite details. As an added bonus, some homes also showcase beautifully landscaped gardens. Funds benefit neighborhood beautification and youth organizations.

Pre-paid tickets will not be mailed. All visitors must first check in at the Tour reception area at the 247 Convent Avenue at W. 141st Street for your pre-paid tickets, tour map and guide. Day of tour tickets may also be purchased at that time. Admission to houses will NOT be permitted without presentation of tour ticket.
