Harlem Split on the Issue of Gay Marriage

On June 2, 2008 by D. Bell

Governor Paterson has expressed that he will support same-sex marriages that have been performed in other places (namely, San Francisco where it is now legal for same sex couples to be officially married). While some long-time Harlem residents have lost faith in the governor, others expressed their approval of his decision.

Pictured above: Rev. Solomon Thomas and Brigette Mills who stand on opposites sides of the same sex issue. Read their opinions after the jump.

The Rev. Solomon Thomas, 70, a Baptist pastor, said he still supported Mr. Paterson but felt like he was acting against the will of many people in New York.

“I like him being the governor,” the minister said. “But I think he made a bad mistake.”

Yet Brigette Mills, 47, who works as a security guard, said that her high opinion of Mr. Paterson was unchanged. He is an honest man, she said, who was correct in standing for other people’s rights.

“I think he’s a great guy,” Ms. Mills said. “And if this opens up doors that’ve been closed for other people, why not?”

  • Amazing that we still are focused on the small things, like what goes on inside people’s bedroom, instead of the big picture. Who cares who someone choses to fall in love with? Love is love, regardless of who it is between.

  • I think it’s great to have a political leader breaking the stereotype that African Americans are all homophobic. Of course Harlem’s leading the trend– yet again!
