Historic Harlem Parks Film Festival

Join us on the lawn at the upper level of the park at 113th Street and Morningside Drive on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for two nights of exceptional documentaries preceded by music and dancing. The Reel Harlem Film Festival is a collaborative effort of the Historic Harlem Parks Coalition (HHPC) of which Friends of Morningside Park is a member. The festival has already had screenings in a number of Harlem parks and this week it comes to Morningside.

Wednesday’s film is Hard Road Home. “Road” is the story of an extraordinary task: turning around the fate of one person born into a cycle of poverty and crime. The film will be preceded by a live dance performance by Uptown Kids Urban Dance Theatre.

Thursday night showcases more local talent. We lead off with classic tunes from the 70′s and 80′s spun for us by park neighbor DJ Stormin’ of Sundae Sermon. Sundae Sermon will also be bringing their music and feel good vibe to Morningside on Aug. 3. Check out their web site for more info. After the music and as darkness falls the film will be Chisholm ’72 by local film maker Shola Lynch who will be on hand to introduce the film. Chisholm ’72 recounts the struggle to win the Democratic presidential nomination that year by the first black woman elected to Congress. The film will be introduced by its maker, Shola Lynch.

We understand that thunderstorms are in the forecast for both evenings. The shows will go on regardless. If we have to call off the outdoor screenings we will be in our rain venue at the Church of the Master on Morningside Ave. between 121 and 122 Street.
