Theme: Vigilance by Jestro

Speaking of the Harlem Shuffle Hot or Not ? I’d say NOT because I am a native New Yorker. I really do not have a problem with progress in life. But what I do have a problem with is that Harlems culture is being chipped away by GREEDY investors daily.
You may write articles stating how real estate sales are doing well and the like. Turthfully the articles are being written by these people whom aren’t struggling to pay rent, put a healthy meal on the table each day or clothing on their kids backs. No one writes about how so many Harlemites are disappearing each month because they are getting evicted and going to overcrowded shelters. No one reports about what affordable housing is truly supposed to be.
The paychecks aren’t being increased but the rents and utility are. I’m sure many would agree that paying $2,500.00 a month for a one bedroom apartment with this bad ecomony. Certainly isn’t affordable by a struggling working couple or single person for that matter. It’s rediculous rents in NYC are higher than most mortgages DO WE SEE THE PROBLEM HERE? Helllllllo !!! Unless like many of the Columbia students your parents were born with silver spoons in their mouths and the kids benefit from it. On a average most working people do not make their rents after working a full 40 hours each week.
Why is it that the employers don’t recognize that as prices surge so should the paychecks of workers to maintain? Tome if you’re going to pay $2,500 per month for rent. Then the take home pay should be no less than $3,600.00 after taxes let’s be real. To cover rent and expenses for utilities, gas, metrocard, personal maintenance etc.
As I walk from St. Nicholas Ave to Lexington Avenues in Harlem. So many businesses that are a part of so many Harlemites history are gone. 125th Street is becoming almost unknown these days for it’s culture it once had. It is wonderful to see various cultures feeling free enough to walk around Harlem now. I think it would be very good for the community too. If we could see more African American people. Being able to enjoy the new Bistros that are being opened in the area. But you don’t see that because they cannot afford the prices to eat out like the others moving in.
We would like to enjoy a nice bottle of Merlot with a great Panini sandwich and salad like anyone else. The summer night breezes are appreciated flowing through our tresses as well. Sadly all many can do is to look and dream about enjoying it as they walk by. And see others enjoying a nice evening with their friends and families. With dinner from a Associated or C-Town grocery store. My last comment on this issue is there’s plans for a hotel, a Pier etc, etc being built. Where are the plans for more grocery stores within these plans for Harlem?
Bottomline it is very sad when you have to travel. To other parts of town in the city to get fresh produce and meats. All we see in the low quality markets is bad produce and meats that smell bad and aren’t the best quality for our bodies. What about the plans to open better supermarkets to replace all of the low quality ones they closed down and were torn down? When will someone whom has the GUTS to write about what’s really going on in Harlem Uptown Flavor? Speak out and stop glossing up the facts. Many people in Harlem aren’t optimistic about all of these fancy stores and businesses as was stated. Let’s be real and tell the facts on both sides of the street. Not just the Rich side with the green grass on its property.
Peace to all.
Dear Ms. J.,
Since you addressed the issue of supermarkets to the site, I thought I would point you in the direction of our previous articles about supermarkets (or the lack thereof). In addition, there are videos that we posted recently that show the disparity in the quality of shopping in Harlem. Please take some time to go through the site and read the older posts. Thanks for reading. Hope you will be contributing more feedback to the site in the future.
