Editor’s Pick: End of Summer Concerts in Harlem

On August 10, 2008 by D. Bell

El Canario

I haven’t done one of these in a while. Here are my top picks for the last few summer concerts taking place in parks around Harlem. There are plenty more concerts taking place, but this is my not to be missed list. Remember to share your photos on our Facebook Fan Page or in our Flickr photo pool.

Slick Rick

Be sure sure to check out Jose “El Canario” Alberto up in Highbridge Park on Tuesday. El Canario means “The Canary” in Spanish so you know that he can sing. El Canario has performed with Latin music legends that include Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, and many more.

Hip Hop legend Slick Rick is freshly pardoned and making up for lost time. He will be doing his thing in the newly renovated Jackie Robinson amphitheater on Wednesday evening.

The following week, make your way back over to Jackie Robinson to get your praise on and party for the Lord with Donald Lawrence and the rest of the gospel crew.

Big Daddy Kane

Big Daddy Kane

In case your old school hip hop jones has you fiending for more, not to worry.

Another hip hop legend, Big Daddy Kane, will be laying it down at Marcus Garvey Park on Thursday.

The following week, head back down to Marcus Garvey Park with a picnic basket, a blanket, and “Wines and Spirits” to share the last weeks of summer with your summer jump off. The R&B vocals will be provided by Rahsaan Patterson, who will smooth things over for the impending end of summer romance.

For the full list of events, visit City Parks Foundation. See schedule and descriptions below.

  • Can I just say I did more free concerts this summer than a little bit and wow, thank you NYC!
Jill Scott, Erykah Badu,Rahsaan and the Greatest in Hip Hop??? for the price of a fish sandwich because I had to have one in true “Geechy” fashion.
If you were trapped in New York like I was working on the “slave ship” these concerts were better than sliced bread – I had a ball and it was the great social unifier!
