Reader’s Choice: Nicole Moore
Way back when I first started this blog (two or three URL extensions ago) I asked my readers to submit their favorite places to get products and services around the neighborhood. The feature turned out to be a one time thing and sort of fell by the wayside. Well, I would like to bring it back. If you have favorite places to go in Harlem that you want to share with your fellow uptowners, submit them to uptownflavor@gmail.com. Include a photo and a little byline and you too can be featured on the site. You don’t have to limit your list to the categories below. Tell us about your favorite Chinese restaurant, wine store, bodega, or laundromat. Tell us about your uptown flavor.
First up to share her list of favorite businesses in Harlem is writer Nicole (The Hotness) Moore who blogs for Uptown Life. You can visit her blog at http://blogs.uptownlife.net/nicolemoore.
Best vegetarian food – Harlem Juice Bar: The best veggie burgers and their soy chicken and rib tips tastes like the real thing. Oh yeah the juice bar is off the chain with elixirs and smoothies that really energize and satisfy.
Best coffee – Hot: Les Ambassades; Iced: Settepani
Best produce – Fairway: Probably the only place uptown you can get artichokes, persimmons, yucca, radishes, and fresh tarragon all in the same place.
Best grocery store – Fairway. Can we say the cheese dept? Second choice: Pathmark
Best gym – n/a
Best Pedicure – unanswered
Best eyebrow shaper - unanswered

Best kept community garden: Covent Garden, 151st and St. Nicholas
Best pizza on planet earth: Patsy’s Pizzeria, 2287 First Avenue, (btwn 117th and 118th)
Well above average pizza: Presidential Pizza, 357 W 125th St, (btwn Manhattan and Morningside)
Best Mexican: Kahlua’s Café 2117 3rd Ave (116th St), the heart of little Mexico
Best Coffee: new Ethiopian restaurant/cafe on 125th between Morningside and Amsterdam
Hotsauce: How much are the pedicures there? Will I need to take a loan out? You know how uptown can sometimes be ridiculous with their pricing?
Native has a Happy Hour: Buy one, get the second either free or half off. Can’t remember which, but it’s a good deal either way.
Cafe Largo has Happy Hour M-F 5-8 but I can’t remember exactly what it entails. I think it is reduced prices on some beers and well drinks
What a coincidence, the spot with the best pedicure was featured here today…Toni’s Touch Day Spa, talk about clean, I’ll never go anywhere else. I actually got a really good pedicure there and three weeks later my feet still look good!! You can have a conversation with the person doing your nails, because they speak English, and I had fun at the same time, because everyone in there seems to have a good sense of humor. I got real good vibes from that place.
I just was walking around 117th and FD yesterday and there is a new restaurant/bar going in by the new Subway franchise – Svntn Below looks to be the name – anyone have any info on that joint?
Does the Harlem Vintage wine bar have a happy hour at 120th and FD? or Moca at 119th and FD?
Dinosaur BBQ has a happy hour I believe but not sure of the prices.
And what’s up with Maroon’s on 145th – I peeked through the doors the other day and there’s been no progress on the build out. i really, really hope they don’t pull out – this area is dying for a sitdown joint.
Best Barber Shop: Figs on 135 & Fredrick Douglass Blvd.
Best Lounge: Covo
the 10oz Rib eye at Cafe Largo is great
anyone one got any happy hours spots to share?
some places don’t have happy hours uptown, which is sad when a bar is empty and 5pm and they want 6 bucks for a Henkein…or 10 buck for a well drink…
oh, btw i was driving down 145th and could of swore i saw a Bar on Lenox just below 145th?
Thanks for those extra additions, Nicole.
Wow I did this a long time ago and would like to add teh following:
Best Fried Fish: A Taste of Seafood
Best Steak: Ricardo’s Steakhouse
Best Place for Brunch: Settepani- Their French Toast will make you slap your momma! And the scrambled eggs with roasted veggies is so satisfying and healthy and in the summer you can enjoy your meal outdoors. Don’t get much better than that!
Best Boutique: Pieces of Harlem
Best Late Night Hang: Talay
And I may not have a Best Pedicure spot, but surely one of the worst was at that new nail spot on 116th bet. 7th & 8th.
