On Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 5:30 pm, African Voices, the premier Black literary arts magazine, will honor song stylist/storyteller Nancy Wilson. Ms. Wilson will be the recipient of the organization’s Ellie Charles Artists Awards. The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC) will join African Voices is paying tribute to Ms. Wilson’s distinguished contributions as an artist and community activist. The celebration will feature performances by Jazz Berry Jam!, renowned vocalist Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch, poet Louis Reyes Rivera with Atiba Wilson and Songhei Djeli. CBJC Chairman Jitu K. Weusi, and Voza Rivers, the chairman of the Harlem Arts Alliance, are among the many special guests participating in the tribute ceremony. WBGO Radio host Rob Crocker will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The program is a benefit for African Voices, a non-profit literary magazine that sponsors readings, the Reel Sisters Film Festival and other cultural events. The reception begins at 5:30 pm and awards ceremony starts at 7:00 pm at Schomburg Center, 515 Lenox Ave (corner 135th St.). Tickets are $100 and $150 (includes private reception).
