Spotlight on The Schomburg
Schomburg Highlights: New Website, Major Exhibit & Treasures Video
The Abolition of the Slave Trade tells the story of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade through original essays linked to collection images, maps, and texts. This just-launched website examines “all the economic, political, social, legal, and moral issues,” says Sylviane Diouf, Schomburg’s Curator of Digital Collections. On the exhibit front, Schomburg hosts Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist, opening September 11, the first touring retrospective of the foremost visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance. In paintings, murals, and book illustrations, Douglas incorporated elements from music, dance, literature, and politics to produce powerful artistic forms that had a lasting impact on American art and the nation’s cultural heritage. Don’t miss Schomburg Director Howard Dodson talking about the Center’s history and Aaron Douglas in Treasures of The New York Public Library, a new NYPL video series showcasing the Library’s unique collections.
