only in harlem do i see people celebrating this stuff. it will affect us all equally if the market falls apart. so dance your funny “whitey’s lost their job” dance…see how if affects your life in about a year. when you lose your job. trickle down economics rains s–t on the rest of us and we’re stupid enough to laugh and celebrate it.
This is the final warning about addressing other commenters before I adjust the settings. You are intelligent enough to make your point…and leave it at that. Thanks for your cooperation.
So that I am clear. I am fairly certain that if the gentrification phenon, as defined by the influxed of whites, among others, into Harlem had not occurred, when one considers the caliber of political representation in Harlem, a renewal of the areas listed above would not have occurred to the extent it has.
Oh we ain’t complainng about the NEW infrastructure, NEW stores, NEW and REHABBED housing stock. We’re jus complaining about some of the arse holes that came with the needed upgrades. Again, not all of the newcomers were arses. But the few that did come made the rest look real bad. You know how it goes. Stereotyping. Of course this is actually terrible news for harlem. Gentrification actually had a positive effect on the community – more money for the small businesses and less crime. Why everyone want to turn it back to a crime ridden crap hole is beyond me.
Yep. As I mentioned earlier, many of these condo / apartments developers will go scavenging for section 8 money etc., if this ecomnomic downturn doesn’t resolve itself soon. I also know a quite few folks who are trying to move their properties, but they are, seemingly, on the market for a longer period of time now. Ahhhh? It’s a buyer’s market, I guess you could say now
Reminds of the the period when Harlem changed from predominantly white, to become predominantly Black, back in the early 20th century. Much unoocuppied new housing stock back then. Only this time it seems the reverse of it may be cut short, so to speak. Grab yer popcorn. Sitback. Take notice.
In a strange way GDAWG what you saying maybe closer to the truth. Especially if this meltdown continues. No bonus this year, so no down payments. Hey no salary. Shows the “system” knows no boundaries on who it will exploit. Hoping that people will be somehow able to support their families. 401K’s with a lot of company stock will be gone like at Enron and it doesn’t look like severance pay will be forthcoming. Will the “progress” then abandon Harlem? D. Bell you should write on a piece on that if it becomes that bad.

Looking at the financial news this morning, and one thing is CERTAIN: The gentrification smackdown of communities like Harlem is over.
