Gawker Media is under the gun and firing 19 people. Nick Denton said that in anticipation of a coming ad slump, he is firing 19 of the company’s 133 editorial staff, suspending bonus payments at the start of next year and bringing in a new managing editor, Gabriel Snyder, who was the West Coast editor at W magazine.

Denton suggested that the golden age of the blog may be over.

Denton tried to soften the blow somewhat by offering the survivors a 5 percent pay hike in lieu of bonus payments and he said he is adding 10 staffers to Jezebel, Deadspin, Kotaku and io9 – but only after the latest bloodletting.
