Election Results: What to Watch for Tonight

On November 4, 2008 by D. Bell

I found this formula online about what to watch for tonight.  It sounds like the rules of a card game.  Hence, why they call politics a game.straight-flush-left

FOR MCCAIN TO WIN:

The GOP nominee has to win Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and Virginia to get to 270 electoral votes comfortably. He can lose Ohio but not Florida or Pennsylvania if he can hold onto North Carolina and Georgia or win in Colorado.

FOR OBAMA TO WIN:

Any combination of Pennsylvania and Ohio or Pennsylvania and Florida or Ohio and Virginia without Florida wins the election easily for Obama. By 10 PM Eastern the results from Colorado and New Mexico will be frosting on a very large electoral cake, if Obama wins Florida and Ohio.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

Obviously early exit polls are important as is weather [heavy rain in predominantly Democratic strongholds of Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads; sunny and clear in Florida and Ohio as well as Pennsylvania]in relation to voter turnout. Pennsylvania is the whole election for McCain; a win there keeps everyone’s state in play. Obama wins Ohio, after that loss and it could still be a very early night. An Obama loss in both of those states could point to the Bradley Effect in play.  On the other hand, an Obama win in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia makes him President of the United States.
