Another Subway Franchise Coming to Harlem?
As I walked past the late Sugarhill Java and Tea Lounge (sigh) I noticed work order permits in the window.
Unfortunately, the new tenant might be a Subway® Restaurant. Maybe I shouldn’t say unfortunately because we don’t have a Subway above 139th Street, unless you head over to Broadway. My chagrin is a result of the fact that Sugarhill did such a fabulous job of making the space feel warm and inviting with exposed brick walls and rich, chocolate brown wood floors. I would hate to see the charm and personality of the space be lost to a sandwich franchise. U.F. has contacted the Subway® headquarters and if we hear back from them we’ll let you know.

there is a new subway opening on madison and 118th as well. accross the street from the former Harlem Tea Room space.
Now, that space makes sense for a Subway. I just consider Subway a low-end chain. I actually used to love Schlotzsky’s because they sold Muffelettas. So good!
