New Cop Drama Coming To ‘Sugar Hill’
Any New York Undercover fans out there? I have to admit that while the show was running on FOX I was still in high school. And although I considered myself pretty mature for my age, back then I didn’t grasp the groundbreaking nature of the show; It was the first police drama to feature minorities in the starring roles.
“New York Undercover” really looked at the delicate issues that blacks and Latinos face when living in urban cities, such as gangs, HIV, and drug addiction. Watching the show now (as a supposed adult) I can truly appreciate the intricacies of the times as reflected by the show, and how the message continues to resonate with modern day issues.
So it was with some excitement (mixed in with a little caution) that I read the latest news coming from the Hollywood Reporter. AMC, the cable channel that’s been gaining some serious “street cred” in the cable drama department ever since getting rave reviews and ratings for Mad Men and Breaking Bad, is getting ready to crank out a number of new shows.
One of the shows is “Hill,” a New York city police drama that takes place in the late 60s. Now I know some of you are already conjuring up images of a recently defunct cop drama that followed that premise and sucked -Life on Mars – but hear me out. The new AMC drama “centers on two police detectives, one black and one white, who team up on the turbulent and unpredictable streets of Harlem in the late 1960s.” Now that sounds juicy! It’ll be an interesting exploration into how the neighborhood went through the process of changing both socially and culturally. The show has secured writers, producers, and a director but they are still working out the kinks before shooting a pilot. I’m curious as to how they will shoot the show. Will it be on location? Or will they use the leftover 125th Street replica set from The Incredible Hulk in Canada. Hmmm. Who would you like to see cast in the new show?
