Job Op: US Census Taker
When I was growing up my mom had all kinds of side hustles to bring extra income into the house — from working part time in stores to delivering phone books to working the polls during elections. Perhaps that is why I can relate so well to the parents on “Everybody Hates Chris.” One of my mom’s more interesting side gigs was working as a census taker.
Every ten years the census is taken and in 2010, the next census will be conducted. The results of the census are very important, especially to communities like Harlem. Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. The first Census was conducted in 1790.
The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. The pay is good, the hours are flexible, and the work is close to home.
Census taker jobs are excellent for retirees, college students, persons who want to work part-time, persons who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community.
Recruitment begins now and by spring census workers will go door to door to update address information. Qualifications include:
- You are able to read, write, and speak English.
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- You are a legal permanent resident, or non-citizen with an appropriate work visa, and you possess a bilingual skill for which there are no available qualified citizens.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have a valid Social Security number.
- You take a written test of basic skills.
- You have a valid driver’s license (for field jobs only).
- You pass a background check.
- You commit to 4 days of training. You will be paid for these days at your regular hourly rate. Training can be held either during daytime hours or during evening and weekend hours.
Note: Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
Bilingual speakers are encouraged to apply!
All census takers must be able to speak English, but bilingual skills in English and other languages are needed in communities that have a large number of residents who speak a language other than English.
Pay is $18.00 and offered on a weekly basis.
