Harlem Heights on BET

On January 10, 2009 by D. Bell

large_harlemheightsA  few months ago we posted a note that BET was looking to replace cast members for a new reality show based here in Harlem.  The cast has been revealed…along with some of their hidden secrets.  Harlem Heights will air on BET, starting March 2, on Mondays at 10 PM. Find our more about the show and the buzzworthy cast after the jump.

“Harlem Heights” chronicles the attempts of a group of young black professionals to make it big in New York City. Among the cast is Brooke Crittendon (she’s second from the left in that photo), who works at MTV and explained part of the reason she appeared on the show is her ex.

“I was involved with a very famous rapper for a number of years,” she said. “And I worked in the news and documentary department (at MTV). So a lot of our pop news
involved myself. But because I sort of played the background to the person that I was dating, I had to go through people saying things about me or just sort of assuming who I was… I just was like, “I just want to let people know what I really am and what I really do. I’m not just this person’s girlfriend.”

A reporter (who doesn’t watch much MTV, apparently) asked the natural follow-up: who’s the famous rapper?

“Part of my personal journey beyond actually wrapping the show is to not mention that person,” she replied, “because if I’m trying to get from under the shadow of being that
person’s girlfriend, I feel like to constantly drop their name and that association is sort of saying, “Hey, I don’t want you to think I’m just that, but I did used to date this really cool person.” You know what I mean?”

  • I just finished reading through all the info on the cast. What a mix. It’s amazing how this show comes on the heels of all the new development in Harlem. Can you imagine this being filmed 5 years ago? Either it would not have gotten filmed or would have had a completely different vibe. It all seems perfectly orchestrated. I’m not shouting conspiracy theories! It’s just good timing. I was just looking at all the screenshots of Club Body, Harlem Lanes, BBraxton(?) and wondered “Wow. thankfully there are some awesome backdrops from some really cool places in Harlem to film these scenes.” Plus, I am a sucker for anything filmed in Harlem. I practically stalked every set location of “American Gangster”. It gives me a great sense of pride seeing my neighborhood on the big(and small) screen. It’ll be interesting to see how this “ninth character” is fleshed out throughout the series. I’ve never watched any of the reality shows on BET. Correction, I don’t watch BET, but this show is at least making me curious and I’m going set up my DVR to watch it. UF has dibbs on the reviews, though! I called it! This is our territory! ;)

  • my boy young harlem on the show

  • Another set up reality show. I read on another site that this show is different from the Hills because all of these people were friends before taping started. FALSE. IF they were friends how did they have casting calls out there. I know for a fact all of these people weren’t friends.

    • I think they use the phrase they were all friends loosely. More than likely it is like “Housewives” where there were some ppl who were friends and they meshed their friends with the other ppl who had friends. The article you are referring to is linked here as well in another thread. BTW, BET is actually launching about 4 or 5 new reality shows this season.

  • Where is Harlem Heights located?

  • ANOTHER SH0W oN BET…..the music is going away slowly….
