So I Joined Bootcamp: Week 3

Those better be tears of joy, maggot!

Well it’s the end of Week 3. Hooray for me! But this third week has an asterisk attached to it. I got terribly sick this week and I missed out Tuesday’s outdoor workout. Part of me is angry about that. Seems like I cheated myself out of the experience. Part of me also agrees that had I showed up I probably would’ve ended up throwing up on the track at Riverbank Park. Besides, that “bump in the road” this week presented more intense workouts and a wider variety of circuit exercises. On one day there were 5 different stations set up. One was for jump-rope, the other for pushups, the other for sit-ups, sprints, etc. You get the idea! Heart rate pumping! We had to complete 3 circuits of those and then each station got a new exercise assignment and we did another 3 circuits followed by ab specific exercises. It did the job alright. And while my breathing is still an issue it’s more under control. I think though that I may sign up for some yoga classes. One of our instructors told me that it would definitely do wonders for my breathing. Today was not lacking in “kick-ass-itude” either. I got through those damn planks succesfully today. Push-ups were in much better shape. Sit-ups are still my weak spot. I’m going to have to practice this weekend. Other than it was another challenging week.

Some bad news. I’ll be flying to Atlanta on Sunday for work and I won’t be returning until Thursday night. That means I’ll be missing 3 days of camp. I emailed my instructor to let me know if she suggests workouts for the week. God knows I’ll still be waking up at 5:30 AM out of habit. Might as well use the gym at the hotel to my advantage. I don’t want to lose the gains I’ve made these last 3 weeks. The truth is I’m more scared of not showing up to bootcamp than showing up. Any time you miss days you pay for it harshly. You don’t get punished or anything. It’s that you trick your body into relaxing when you miss a day or even if you’re inactive during the weekend break. And when you return it’s that Day 1 feeling again.

Nutrition

I haven’t really touched on this subject. And it’s for selfish reasons I admit. I honestly have not been on top of my nutrition. I’m not gorging on McDonald’s or anything but I haven’t stuck to any organized eating regimen. The only good meal I have is right after my workout. An egg-white sandwich on toasted whole wheat (just salt & pepper) and a “Revive” Vitamin Water. You got your proteins, your slow digesting carbs, and your quick digesting sugars to help you recover from the bashing. I honestly cannot get to work in one piece without that power combo. Aside from that important meal though I have not been as responsible as I should. To my credit I have been drinking an obscenely amount of water. I have also weaned off my soda addiction from 1 Liter a day to roughly two 16oz cans a week. However, I am taking the initiative to commit better these next 6 weeks. Although I have lost some weight and I feel healthier I’d be doing a lot better with a nutritional regimen. At bootcamp we were recommended the food-combining system. It basically says you can’t mix your starches and proteins based on their pH levels. So basically rice with chicken breast or baked potato with salmon would be prohibited. I did a little research on this and the results are mixed  so I’m going to stick to my old healthy regimen, the Men’s Health Belly-Off eating plan. The beauty of this is that it creates my whole shopping list and gives me my meals in advance. And it’s free! So here’s to good, healthy eats next week.

Superbowl

I need not say more. I am religious about my Superbowl watching experience. I’m already ticked off that I’ll be in the air at kick-off so I’ll be rushing to my hotel room. Rest assured I will not be stuffing my face with bad food but I will be having me my Cheesesteak Sandwich!

  • Keep up the hard work! It’s totally worth it. I did bootcamp last spring and was pleased with the results. Try yoga at Neighborhood Holistic on 128th St. Lyn-Genet is one of the best yoga instructors. Angela on Sundays at NYSC is great as well but that class may be a bit challenging for a beginner. Lastly, once you really get into the yoga thing, I’ve recently gotten into Bikram. Stephanie at Bikram East Harlem is a great instructor.

  • Since you are working so hard with the work outs there is no need to undo what you have done by eating poorly. If you can completely kick the soda habit or get down to one 12 or smaller can a day that would be good. Replace your soda craving with a glass of iced tea or water. The problem with soda is the corn syrup. Also so sad you won’t be “wingin’ it” tomorrow. Safe travels.
