Gabe is back in the nabe

On February 23, 2009 by D. Bell

I got the following email from artist Gabriel Serpa about changes to the Hamilton Heights area complete with accompanying photo.  I haven’t had a chance to check out Globe Trippin’ though it was mentioned a few weeks back by Thomas at LiveUptown.com.building

*Update:
First, I need to give a couple corrections: The Beauty Store took over the Seventh Day Adventist store. And Globe Trippin is next too the Dollar cafe.

Returned to Harlem. Here is the rundown of new changes in the ‘hood.
The new rental building is being built fast, with three stories already completed.(620 143rd St.) (check attached photo)
I spoke to my guys over at the hardware store and they told me that a similar building is in the works a few blocks down.
Next to the Chase bank on 144th is a new deli. The previous tenant was a lady that did taxes. I never spoke with her but here place looked as if it had been occupied for a very long time. (about 5 or 6 deli’s from 137th to 146th have been remodeled and carry more expensive items.)Over on Amsterdam and next to City College there is a “Coming soon” banner for a Pizzeria, serving wraps and salads. Further down the block is a new cafe called Globe Trippin, which I believe has taken over the previous tenant Dollar Internet Cafe. Globe Trippin was closed when I walked by, however, it looks cool and had flyers offering live Jazz and events celebrating black history month.

On 145th is a new Beauty Supply store, which use to be occupied by Century Real Estate and before them Dwelling Quest.

Finally, I had lunch over at Sylvia’s yesterday. I was with Harlem/Mexico City photographer Carlos Alvarez Montero. (check out his site for pics of Harlem. www.alvarezmontero.com) He was making photos for a travel magazine.
