That Stinks! Smokers watch their cash go up in smoke

As of yesterday cigarettes in New York City have topped out at $10.00 a pack. A federal tax is now $1.01 per pack, more than double the previous tax. That brings the government fees to $5.26 a pack — more than half the cost said cigarette pack.

New York City has steadily been increasing the price of cigarettes since 2002.  Each price increase has resulted in small percentages of New Yorkers seeking to extinguish the costly habit. Health officials estimate that the recent round of increases will result in as many as 20,000 adult New Yorkers deciding to quit smoking. Yesterday the health department conducted a free nicotine patch giveaway on Wednesday in public hospitals and other sites. If you missed this round of free patches, contact Harlem Hospital’s Smoking Cessation Program to find out when the next give-a-way is scheduled.
